What's Included in Professional Tire Installation

When you hear "tire installation," the actual scope of that work varies a lot between shops. Some places charge extra for balancing, some skip the TPMS reset, and a few will hand your old tires back to you because they don't want the disposal hassle. Here's exactly what's included every time we install a set of tires at our Jerome shop.

Every tire installation includes mounting the new tires on your wheels, computer balancing to eliminate vibration at highway speeds, new valve stems on every corner, a TPMS sensor reset and re-learn where your vehicle is equipped with tire-pressure monitoring, torquing the wheels to manufacturer specification, and recycling your old tires. Before your vehicle leaves the bay, we re-check pressures and set them to the number on your door jamb sticker — not a round number we guessed at. No itemized add-ons at the counter, no surprises on the invoice.

Mounting & Computer Balancing

Proper mounting matters more than most drivers realize. A tire that's seated unevenly on the bead, installed with the rotation direction wrong, or torqued incorrectly will wear faster and handle worse no matter how good the tire itself is. We use tire mounting equipment designed for the range of wheel sizes we see in the Magic Valley — from standard passenger-car 15-inch wheels to 22-inch truck wheels and commercial sizes — and we check the bead seat visually on every tire before the wheel goes back on the vehicle.

Computer balancing eliminates the vibration that comes from small weight variations in the tire-and-wheel assembly. Every set gets balanced on our dynamic balancer, which spins the assembly at speed and tells us exactly where and how much weight to add. If you've ever felt a steering-wheel shake at highway speeds that went away after a balancing job, you know what unbalanced tires feel like. We don't send wheels back out unbalanced.

For trucks and SUVs with staggered fitments — wider tires in the rear than the front — we handle the fitment requirements specific to your vehicle so the spare matches, the handling geometry is right, and your tire rotation schedule works the way it should.

TPMS Service & Sensor Reset

Tire-pressure monitoring systems have been required on new passenger vehicles since 2008, and they're common on trucks and SUVs as well. After a tire swap, the TPMS system needs to be reset and re-learned so each sensor is matched to the correct wheel position. Skip that step and your low-pressure warning light either stays on permanently or reports the wrong corner — neither is useful.

We reset and re-learn TPMS as a standard part of every installation. We also test sensors during the service. TPMS sensors run on batteries that typically last 7–10 years; if a sensor is reading intermittently or throwing a fault code, we'll tell you and quote the replacement before we finish the job. A failed sensor doesn't prevent installation, but it means your pressure monitoring won't work correctly until it's fixed. We'll give you the choice.

If you've bought winter tires on a second set of wheels and swap them yourself each season, bring both sets in when you do the swap — we can reset the TPMS in about 20 minutes so your warning system is accurate all year.

Tire Repair & Flat Fixes

Not every tire that loses pressure needs to be replaced. A puncture in the tread area — from a nail, screw, or piece of road debris — is usually repairable with a proper patch-plug combination installed from inside the tire. That kind of repair, done right, is as strong as the original tire and will last for the remaining life of the tread.

What isn't repairable: punctures in or near the sidewall, damage from running flat for any significant distance, or tread worn too thin to be safe. When we inspect a flat, we look at the damage location, the condition of the bead, and the remaining tread depth. If the tire can be safely repaired, we'll do the repair. If it can't, we'll show you what we found and why replacement is the right call — not because we want to sell a tire, but because sending someone back onto I-84 on a questionable tire isn't something we're willing to do.

Most flat repairs are fast enough that you can wait in the shop. Call ahead if your schedule is tight and we'll give you a realistic time estimate.

Bought Tires Online? We Install Them

Buying tires online and having them shipped to a local shop for installation is increasingly common, and we're set up for it. If you've already purchased tires through Tire Rack, Discount Tire Direct, or any other online retailer, you can have them shipped directly to our shop and we'll do the installation when they arrive.

Our preference is to have you buy through our shop tool, because we can confirm the right fitment before the tires ship and bundle installation at the best total price. But we understand that some customers have already ordered elsewhere, found a specific model they wanted, or got a deal they couldn't pass up. Either way, we'll install them correctly.

Tire Installation Cost & What to Expect

Installation cost depends on tire size and wheel diameter — larger wheels take more time and specialized equipment, and some commercial truck sizes require different tooling than standard passenger sizes. We quote installation up front, before we touch anything, so you know the full cost before you commit.

When you buy tires through our shop tool, installation is typically bundled or priced together so you can see the total cost — not a tire price that surprises you with add-on fees at the counter. That's intentional. The number you see should be the number you pay.

A standard four-tire installation on a passenger vehicle or light truck typically takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the size, how backed up the bays are, and whether we find anything that needs attention while the wheels are off — like a loose lug stud, corroded valve stem, or worn hub that's worth catching now. If we notice something during the install, we'll point it out before we proceed.

After your tires are on, maintaining them is straightforward. Regular tire rotation every 5,000–7,500 miles is the single biggest thing you can do to extend tread life. Keeping your wheel alignment in spec prevents uneven wear that no amount of rotation will fix. And checking pressures monthly — or trusting your TPMS to alert you — keeps fuel economy and handling where they should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in tire installation?

Mounting, computer balancing, new valve stems, TPMS reset where equipped, torque to spec, and disposal of your old tires. We re-check your pressures before you leave.

Will you install tires I bought online?

Yes. Bring tires you purchased anywhere — or buy through our shop tool and we'll have them shipped here — and we'll mount, balance, and install them.

How much does tire installation cost?

It depends on tire and wheel size, but we quote it up front with no surprises. Buying your tires through us usually bundles installation at the best total price.

Do you service TPMS sensors?

Yes. We reset and re-learn your tire-pressure monitoring system after installation, and we can test or replace failed TPMS sensors.

Can you fix a flat instead of replacing the tire?

When it's safe to — a puncture in the tread area is usually repairable with a proper patch-plug. Sidewall damage or worn tread means replacement, and we'll show you why.
