A customer called on a Saturday in July from a boat ramp at Salmon Falls Creek. He’d dropped his only key in the lake an hour earlier. Tuesday he was towed to our shop, Wednesday morning we cut and programmed a new key, and by lunch he was on the road. The dealer in Twin Falls had quoted him ten days. That’s the gap that key programming Jerome Idaho fills — same-week service, often same-day, without the dealer markup or the wait list.
Modern keys and fobs are not just metal — they’re computers. Programming means talking to the vehicle’s body control module, reading the security system, and registering a new key the system will accept. That takes the right equipment and the right software. We have both.
What we do in our key bay
- Cut metal keys, including transponder-chip cuts and laser-cut sidewinder keys.
- Program transponder keys on most domestic and import vehicles.
- Push-to-start and proximity smart fob programming.
- Lost-key (all-keys-lost) programming where supported.
- Spare key cutting and programming so you’re not down to one key.
- Remote fob shell replacement when the buttons are worn out but the chip is fine.
- Key fob battery replacement.
Why people end up at our key bay
Lost keys at the lake are an annual story. So are fobs that finally give up after a few years of farm work — drenched in irrigation water, dropped on concrete, sat on by a passenger, run through the wash. Work truck fobs especially take a beating. By the time a customer calls, it’s usually because the fob has been spotty for a while and finally stopped working altogether.
Dealer wait times are the other reason. Twin Falls is a 25-minute drive, the appointment is usually a week or two out, and the cost is higher. We keep most common transponder and proximity blanks in stock and program them while you wait.
What to bring with you
For most jobs we need the vehicle on-site, current registration, and a valid ID matching the registration. Programming a spare while you still have a working key is faster — usually 20 to 45 minutes. All-keys-lost programming takes longer because the security system has to be reset before a new key can be registered.
If you’re not sure whether your vehicle is supported, call with the year, make, model, and a quick description of the key (metal blade, push-to-start, flip key, etc.). We’ll confirm before you drive down.
Where key work touches the rest of the shop
Keys and ignition systems are deeply tied to the vehicle’s electrical system. Intermittent starting problems sometimes look like a key issue but turn out to be a bad ignition switch or wiring fault. If you can’t get to the shop, our mobile mechanic can come to you for many key programming jobs. The full overview of what we do is on the services page.
Honest estimates, no dealer markup
We quote before we cut. You know the cost of the blank, the programming time, and any additional steps before we start. If your vehicle is one of the rare cases that genuinely requires a dealer, we’ll tell you that instead of charging for a job we can’t finish. Call or book online and we’ll get you on the schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really program keys without sending me to the dealer?
For most makes and model years, yes. We program transponder keys, push-to-start smart keys, and proximity fobs on a wide range of domestic and import vehicles. A small number of newer luxury models still require a dealer trip — we’ll tell you up front if yours is one of those.
I lost my only key. Can you still make one?
Yes. All-keys-lost programming is possible on most vehicles. We may need the vehicle on-site, a valid ID matching the registration, and a little extra time compared to programming a spare.
How much does a key or fob cost?
It depends on the vehicle and the key type. A basic cut key on an older truck is inexpensive. A push-to-start smart fob on a newer vehicle costs more because the fob itself is more expensive. We quote before we order anything.
Do you make keys for work trucks and farm vehicles?
Yes. Pickups, work vans, semi tractors, and farm trucks are routine. If your fob has been through harvest one too many times, we can usually program a fresh one the same day.
Do you do residential or commercial locksmith work?
No — automotive only. Keys and fobs for vehicles is what we do, and we focus on doing that well.
